An Overview of Music Therapy in Utah Early Intervention

adminEarly Intervention
We are working to expand the possibilities for music therapy in Utah Early Intervention Programs. Here’s a brief overview of we are in the process.

At Harmony Music Therapy we use music therapy with a variety of populations, one of which is children in Early Intervention. Children are typically involved in 0-3 early intervention programs if they have special needs or developmental delays that are concerning to parents and medical providers. Common areas of need include speech development, behavioral challenges, physical delays, and social difficulties. Music therapy addresses all of these goal areas nicely and is accessible for parents to implement at home as well.

In Utah we are currently working with two of the fifteen state Early Intervention programs, with a focus on group treatment in order to maximize funds. We use group singing to work toward communication goals, instrument play to address physical and social skills, movement games to address impulse control and sensory needs, and relaxation exercises to help with self regulation.

Our current State Certification credential for Music Therapists has made it possible for music therapists to obtain an “Early Intervention Provider” credential and be listed on the child’s Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). Prior to this change we were required to have another provider present in order to address IFSP goals for the child. However we are still somewhat limited in how much of the training we complete and the extent of services we provide, and there is room for powerful growth into individual music therapy services for these children in their homes.
