A Picture of Music Therapy
Oh, the power of music therapy!
As the sun begins to rise over the mountains, a small child peeks through the blinds, anxiously awaiting her arrival. Where will they go on their adventures today? To the ocean, to the jungle, or to the rings of Saturn’s rays? The doorbell rings. He races to meet her. As she enters, guitar on her back, instruments in a giant sack, he greets her with a smile and states “Story, oliver, bubble ice cream!?”. The journey begins with a pig named Oliver, and ends with a boy with autism making social connections through music.
WHO WE ARE:
Harmony Music Therapy is a team led organization of music therapists whose members are passionate about using music to effect positive change. As music therapists we are trained to use music to elicit growth and development.
WHAT WE DO:
We focus on being a supportive role in your child’s pathway to success. During music therapy sessions, music interventions are implemented to address non-musical goals such as communication, social skills, and self regulation skills.
HOW WE DO IT:
A famous philosopher once stated, “Music is a communication far more powerful than words, far more immediate, far more efficient”. As each person has an innate response to music, music therapists build upon that relationship to make connections whether it be through social skills, communication, or emotional expression.
WHY WE DO IT:
A music therapist once stated “Music therapy can make the difference between isolation and interaction, between withdrawal and awareness, between demoralization and dignity”. We believe that music therapy can foster an environment of growth, expression, and connection. As the supporting role in your child’s journey we are passionate about finding creative ways to help your child succeed.
As the clock chimes on the hour, the session comes to a close. “Goodbye, goodbye. Thank you for making music”, they sing as he helps her pack away the instruments.
“Goodbye scarves, goodbye ocean drum, goodbye shakers”
“And goodbye to….”, his mother prompts.
The boy looks up with a smile, engages in eye contact with the music therapist and sings proudly “Goodbye to Cassie, Thank you for making music”.
